Brown & Dancers creates and presents performances, offers dance engagement activities, and investigates historical and contemporary cultural, personal, and social justice issues through the art of dance theater. The Company provides a multi-faceted platform for sharing and building understanding of and appreciation for the African-American experience and fosters interaction and dialogue among diverse communities in our hometown of NYC, across the country, and globally.
Our engagement platform EVERY BODY MOVE works to inspire and incite ambitious collective action fueled by the art of social dance. Built on our belief that social dance works as a powerful tool for social change, EVERY BODY MOVE (EBM) brings the artistic rigor of Camille A. Brown & Dancers (CABD) beyond the stage into communities. EBM works to cultivate the creative capacity of its participants through innovative workshops, summer intensives, artistic encounters, educational experiences, public actions, and celebrations for people of diverse abilities, identities, and ages.
EBM’S FLAGSHIP INITIATIVES INCLUDE:
BLACK GIRL SPECTRUM - a 10 to 12 session experience in movement, self-empowerment, and creative action for black girls and women.
BLACK MEN MOVING - an interactive experience exploring healthy masculinity, movement, and creative action for black boys and men.
CREATIVE ACTION LAB - an immersive creative engagement for cultural workers, artists, and educators working for local change through extended artistic campaigns, organizing efforts, and projects.
The ideal EBM Engagement Manager has strong administrative skills and is inspired to organize creative encounters in schools, communities, and cultural institutions in NYC’s five boroughs. The Manager believes in the power of the arts to spark change, is a deep listener, learner, and leader of creative change in his or her neighborhoods and beyond. CABD is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented person, with a strong work ethic to join our team as the EBM Manager, to help our compelling program move forward strategically and efficiently towards our ambitious goals. The Manager plays a pivotal role on the team, supporting the administrative and programmatic operations of the organization. The ideal candidate has a track record of handling multiple responsibilities efficiently, is motivated by supporting others to do their best work and honors all meetings, events, and community encounters with equal energy, attention and promptness. The Manager is someone who is fulfilled by the day to day work of behind-the-scenes operations and community partner relationship building and will embrace this role as an opportunity to impact and support our community facilitators/teaching artists and students as we work toward social change.
QUALIFICATIONS
▪ Bachelor’s degree, preferably arts, social justice or business related, 4-6 years of full-time experience preferred.
▪ A highly-developed understanding of cultural organizing, social practice, community-based arts facilitation, and/or arts
organizing practices.
▪ Experience working with multi-generational communities of artists and non-artists of diverse abilities, backgrounds, and
identities. Passion for and knowledge of dance practice and dancers a plus.
▪ Comfort communicating with partners of all ages, races, and backgrounds including people in leadership positions such as
school principals, directors of community centers, etc.
▪ Required competencies: fluency with Microsoft Office (esp. Word, Excel and PowerPoint); Google Drive applications; basic
bookkeeping. Photoshop, QuickBooks, video editing a plus.
▪ Must have your own working computer at home and internet access, a laptop you can travel with a plus.
▪ Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with strong copy editing skills.
▪ Ability to juggle several tasks at once, especially in a fast-paced environment.
▪ Exceptional ability to build and execute project plans.
▪ Ability to make timely decisions and demonstrate good judgment.
▪ Must be able to travel to community sites and work remotely as needed, be available for occasional evening and weekend
hours as scheduled.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Seek and forge new partnership opportunities with community groups and schools for EBM programs.
Manage new and existing partnerships.
Schedule, coordinate and facilitate meetings and trainings of community facilitators/teaching artists, as needed, professional development trainings for partners as requested, and provide support at EBM and Company events.
Support EBM facilitators with their program needs via onsite meetings and other communications.
Manage correspondence and the EBM calendar; gather information for grant applications and reporting.
Coordinate video and photographic documentation of events, workshops and residencies.
Coordinate distribution of evaluation surveys and schedule exit interviews with all partners, review evaluations with community facilitators prior to distribution, organize and coordinate end of year evaluation of the program.
Organize, coordinate and plan the annual EBM Celebration.
Organize, manage and execute such key operational tasks as: scheduling meetings, drafting artist and client agreements, tracking facilitator hours and workshop attendance, handling internal and external correspondence; and other duties as may arise.
The Engagement Manager reports directly to CABD’s Executive Director and Artistic Director. The role is conceived as either full-time or ¾ time (work on average 30 hours per week) depending on the needs and experience of the right candidate. The salary range is competitive and will be based on experience and time commitment.
