What is The Gathering?

Conceived by director & choreographer Camille A. Brown, The Gathering serves as an open forum for intergenerational Black female artists to support one another, advocate for greater cultural equity and acknowledgement in the contemporary dance world, share information, grow and learn together, and heal and revitalize.

This evolving group of Black female choreographers will meet to exchange ideas and participate in workshops and discussions focused on the needs of BIPOC female artists, as they strive to make their work more broadly accessible and appreciated.

The inaugural year for The Gathering was 2014 at New York City Center.

The Gathering in 2021

COVID-19 has affected our world and communities in more ways than we could have ever imagined. The virus--combined with the dual pandemics of police brutality and social injustice--has traumatized our wellbeing and mental health, and has critically impacted our creative energies.  Considering the exhaustive amount of labor, perseverance, and resilience it takes to be a Black woman under ordinary circumstances, The Gathering 2021 will move from a day-long format, to a virtual four-day event, April 20-23 with a special culminating workshop on May 5, offering free sessions centering on mental wellness, healing, and revolutionary self-care.

The event will also include professional development sessions led by experts in the field on pressing matters during these unprecedented times, including how to stay connected to your  donors in the virtual space during Covid-19; intellectual property rights, royalties and licenses, on the stage, video and virtual space; mastering remote technology for your online presence; and a special May workshop on navigating presenter relationships.

CABD is proud to partner with DanceNYC, the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD), and The Field to make The Gathering possible.

A Week of Free Sessions for Learning, Sharing & Healing.
All Events Will Take Place on ZOOM, ASL Interpretation and Closed Captioning Services Will Be Provided.
Registration is Open!

THE DANCE – PUBLIC PRESENTATION AND RIGHTS...How Licenses and Copyright Serve & Confine My Artform?
-Workshop led by Charmaine Jefferson, 2PM EST

Renew & Restore
-Healing Session led by Maria Bauman Morales, 6PM EST
As a community organizer and artist still creating work and holding space for communities, like so many of us are, I am keenly aware of our dwindling opportunities for rest, stillness and renewal even amidst the global pandemic. The collective stress of navigating a break-neck pace while learning new ways of being and of connecting with people creates high levels of cortisol and keeps us from being the best family- and community-members we can be. During this workshop, we are slowing down to invite in restoration with guided breathing and light physical centering practices. The session includes both time with our cameras on to take solace in one another and with our cameras off to relax inward and be guided. Please have a small ball handy (ie. tennis ball or pinky ball). This experience is for people of all shapes, sizes, genders and abilities.

Dance & Mental Health- A Journey to Healing
- Healing Session led by Francine Ott, 6PM EST
The workshop is a journey through the body that increases physical, social, mental, emotional, and spiritual awareness. Participants will learn dance/movement that will help them connect with the internal rhythm of their voices. Whether working individually or in a group, each person will learn what it means to embody the inherent healing aspects of who they are through dance. This unique therapeutic process is a transformative experience integrating mental health and dance.
